Malware vendors love the cloud

Security firm Solutionary has published its risk study for the fourth quarter of 2013.According to the experts, there is an increased trend towards the use of cloud offerings to distribute malware. This use malware developers offers the same reasons as legitimate users: The initial cost is low and developers to distribute their malicious software quickly via their own pages. Also, the trusted basically IP addresses of the major providers complicate the blocking by blacklists.

29 percent of all malware in the fourth quarter of 2013 was spread over the server of ten hosters. Sweet 16 percent of which on the cloud platform from Amazon. Thus, the provider assumes a global top spot of all hosting providers in this area. An honor to refer to the group probably could do without thanks. Google manages it with a share of six percent just in time to get a place in this dubious Top 10 list.

Malware: Germany followed the U.S.

Solutionary has divided the origin of malware even after the geographical location of the server. 44 percent of all malicious software come here from American servers. Germany manages nine percent to second place. The distribution corresponds primarily to the proliferation of web hosting in the various countries in general. For Solutionary it is a reminder that the blocking of servers can be no effective measure against the spread of malicious software on their location.

The fact that people or organizations who earn their money with the spread of malicious software, increasingly rely on cloud offerings appears only logical. That hosting provider in many cases can hardly protect, shows another part of the malware study . Solutionary examined over 750 malicious programs that they found in the form of Windows PE files on the servers of OVH Hosters. A test with 40 virus scanners has shown that none of the programs has been able to detect the malicious software as such.
