Canonical at CES a few days ago Ubuntu for smartphones unveiled. Now the company has announced that in February it plans to provide the Ubuntu version of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus to download.

Canonical will initially be limited to the Galaxy Nexus. While Ubuntu can run on many different devices, but for each individual must have the appropriate hardware drivers. Since the Android modding scene is very active and Ubuntu is open source, it is not certain appear too long until the first of Rome, other smart phones on the network.

Ubuntu has developed a completely new approach to using mobile phones. So there is no classic example lock screen. You start programs by the sides of the screen in the middle of wiping if you should accidentally tap the home screen simply nothing happens. Thus, a classic lockscreen connected directly to the display and starting an app and the user must make the operation one step less than on other mobile operating systems.

Ubuntu for phones is not a customized version, but a full-fledged Ubuntu with a customized user interface. Thus allows both web apps and native apps programmed use.

I regret it a little at the moment to have sold my Galaxy Nexus for the Nexus 4 and am curious how Ubuntu can be operated on a smartphone in the flesh. Maybe Canonical has created in the shortest time a viable competitor to iOS, Android and Windows Phone. We are certainly looking forward to the development of very!
