The  Toshiba Encore is finally in the last few days available in Germany and will arrive in the near future with us for a test. From the USA now already achieved us the first slightly more detailed hands-on video, which covers the features of this 8-inch Windows 8.1 Tablets - also in comparison with the Lenovo Miix2 and Dell Venue Pro 8 .

Although the technical data of all new 8 inch Windows 8.1 tablets are almost identical, there are some differences that could affect the purchase decision. The  Toshiba Encore WT8 comes with an Intel Bay Trail Z3740 quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM and either 32 or 64 GB of internal memory, which can be naturally expand. The 8-inch IPS display offers a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels, a good brightness and wide viewing angle. On the front you will find not only a pretty good 2 MP camera that also offers a good quality when the light conditions are not so good, but also a capacitive Windows button. This reacts a bit delayed, so you can not accidentally press it. Might not be important in landscape mode with the size.

The back is indeed made of plastic, but is equipped with a dotted profile. There you will find next to the apparently quite good 8 MP camera also the Toshiba logo and only an Intel sticker. Toshiba has there so practiced in moderation.

Although the Toshiba Encore WT8 brings whopping 445 grams on the scale, it is a not so difficult to occur. Especially compared to the Lenovo Miix2 with 350 grams and the Dell Venue Pro 8 with 388 grams we can believe that but barely. But the battery life the Toshiba Encore WT8 will probably be somewhat better. In addition, there are other ports and modules.

The Toshiba Encore WT8 has therefore not only a micro HDMI port and two stereo speakers, but also a GPS module . It could be used to store maps offline on your tablet and so, for example, navigate or operate geocaching. Since no own UMTS module is installed, you would have to connect a UMTS stick a pinch or access via smartphone to the Internet. Through full-fledged Windows 8.1 but you can just use a UMTS stick with a USB cable.

Of course, Windows also here is 8.1 and the full version of Microsoft Office installed 2013. Through the HDMI output, you can connect the tablet to an external monitor even easier. Charging, the Toshiba Encore WT8 can but again only via micro-USB. In terms of price, we are for the 32-GB version at 299 €.
