The site PhoneArena gives us a nice comparison test between the screens of terminals in vogue at the time, comparing them on so many factors that determine the overall quality of display. How does iPhone 5 than the competition?
We know that Apple iPhone 5, HTC One, Sony Xperia Z and Nokia Lumia 920 has IPS LCD panels, as opposed to the proposals for Samsung Galaxy S3 and S4 are based on Super AMOLED technology. This ensures deep blacks, but fails to offer a full range of grays, as well as offering shade too cold, especially in the most extreme viewing angles.
BRIGHTNESS AND VISIBILITY
From the point of view of the brightness and visibility, the proposals with the best results are given by the LCD panels, extremely brighter than those OLED. The advantages of the first evident especially in extreme lighting conditions (outdoors in direct sunlight) when S3 and S4 do not seem to offer the same readability of the content. However, the latter provides better results than its predecessor. Furthermore, the products of Samsung can not lower the brightness over a certain threshold, becoming a bit 'annoying in the dark.
The winner in this field is iPhone 5.
ANGLE OF VIEW
All smartphones have shown excellent results from this point of view. PhoneArena reports only the Xperia Z where the contrast and brightness degrades rapidly once bend the terminal before our eyes. In ascending order in the ranking we have then the two Galaxy S with evidence that tend to cool shades once they bend slightly. Contrast and brightness are good.
As usual, the LCD panels of other solutions are best in these circumstances, with the HTC One and iPhone 5 which behave in an exemplary manner. Lumia 920 has to be similar to the Xperia Z.
The winners are iPhone 5 and HTC One.
RESOLUTION
This is a totally objective. There is no doubt - according to PhoneArena - that the new terminals that have 400 PPI (pixels per inch) and most have something more than iPhone 5, Lumia 920 and Galaxy S3, which respectively 326, 332 and 306 PPI. The results of the latter are considerable and it is impossible to see the pixels except at extremely small distances. But what they fail to make new panels S4 Galaxy, HTC Z One and Xperia pushes the bar even higher to a point, hiding completely the matrix of PenTile AMOLED S4.
The winner of this category is HTC One, with an LCD screen FullHD 468 PPI that no PenTile matrix offers a perfect viewing, as you can see from the picture below.
The best colors are offered by LCD display, iPhone 5 and HTC One in the head. Their color fidelity is exemplary. Lumia 920 offers good results, even if the colors are not as lively as the proposals mentioned above. Xperia Z offers a high fidelity, but that goes to degrade significantly if we change even slightly viewing angles.
The AMOLED has improved considerably in recent years, but still - according to PhoneArena - did not reach the levels of the proposals based on IPS LCD. The direction taken is the right one, but still have images that are extremely prone to cold colors. Despite all Galaxy S3 is much more "tending to cyan" compared to the new model, a sign that Samsung is making the right choices of evolution.
The winners are iPhone 5 and HTC One.
CONCLUSIONS
According to PhoneArena, the terminals that offer the best overall image quality are iPhone 5 and HTC One and this seems to have no doubts. However, the progress that is making Samsung the evolution of its OLED panels are obvious. S4 The display is a clear trend compared to that present on S3, but there is still a long way to go before the results offered LCD technology, a lot more mature.
